The piece LIFE examines a volume of LIFE magazines from the 1960’s and 1970’s. Through the medium of palimpsest animation, the pages have been highlighted, redacted, juxtaposed and animated to amplify the societal constructions being reinforced by the iconic magazine. In the exploration, there are threads of my own confrontation with identity as well as a weaved loop reiterated the meaning of the title LIFE. The piece exists as a volume of selected pages and as a 1x6k loop film intended for installation. LIFE was commissioned for and shown at the 2017 FOTOfest exhibition Rethinking Photography. The work is the subject of an essay by John Semlitsch titled The Friction of Recognition, published in the Florida State University journal.
